The When Is Now

Numerous cyberattacks on water systems raise alarms across the United States.

In late July 2026, cyberattacks on water systems in Minnesota made national headlines. More attacks followed across state lines with the tally reaching 12 states. The U.S. EPA, FBI and Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) released press releases pointing to programmable logic controllers as the entry point for attackers believed to be associated with Iran, although not officially confirmed by federal sources.

This eBook aims to explain this occurence, highlight the challenges in cybersecurity resilience in the municipal water sector, and provide expertise from the electronics and security markets that show how protection from these attacks requires the water market to look outside its own bubble for answers.
