GENEVA -- DuPont Sustainable Solutions (DSS) has announced the winners of the 14th DuPont Safety and Sustainability Awards, recognized for the innovative, systemic changes they have made to their operations. The winners of the three global awards are:

  • Dubai Municipality, UAE – Global Sustainability Award
  • Engro Fertilizers Limited, Pakistan – Global Safety Innovation Award
  • SMRT Trains Ltd, Singapore – Global Operations Improvement Award

Senior executives from a number of the award-winning companies will take part in an online panel discussion about the ability to sustain operational improvements and consolidate performance even in challenging times. The discussion, hosted by DSS CEO Davide Vassallo, will be broadcast around the globe on Thursday, February 25th and will be followed by a live Q&A session.  Among the panelists are:

  • Ms. Akanksha Sharma, Global Head – Social Impact and Sustainability, Sterlite Technologies Ltd.
  • Mr. Alvin Kek Yoke Boon, Senior Vice President – Rail Operations, SMRT Trains

Further panelists will be announced closer to the date.

“I would invite us all to find inspiration in the stories of the global award-winners, far beyond the specifics of their program or initiative,” said jury president, Mieke Jacobs.

“The critical success factors are transferrable beyond region, industry, size and maturity. They start with engaging all stakeholders in the urgency to change, from employees to communities. Momentum is gained by a bottoms-up approach, acting on the improvement ideas at all levels in the organization and with critical partners. That requires resilience and persistence in times of adversity. It demands courage, and creativity as innovative solutions and new technologies become increasingly more important to stay ahead of the game. In our panel discussions, we will engage the award-winners in a conversation about the lessons they have learnt, some of them hard-won.”

The award-winning projects
Dubai Municipality was recognized for the development and introduction of an integrated, sustainable wastewater recycling program in Dubai which more than doubled daily sewage treatment capacity on the same footprint while using approx. 25% less power to operate. The municipality has made significant advances in implementing the principles of a circular economy.

Engro Fertilizers undertook a root and branch overhaul of its safety systems, invested in digitization initiatives, and doubled down efforts on development of new capabilities. In line with Engro’s philosophy of being world class in HSE, the all-encompassing Safety Beyond Excellence strategy led to an 87% reduction in the Total Recordable Incident Rate, resulted in a sharp reduction in operational upsets / fire incidents, significantly improved risk management and led to an increase in employee and stakeholder engagement. All this eventually led to significant gains in company profits.

Staff at the SMRT, the pioneer Mass Rapid Transit operator in Singapore, developed innovative initiatives which include a laser track trolley for safer and more efficient running of rail wear and track assessment, the introduction of an automated track access management system, and the establishment of a mobile operation and maintenance system. These improvements alone, which are part of a wider Kaizen management philosophy for continual improvements in workflows, have achieved a substantial reduction in manhours equating to savings of S$ 10.3 million/year while, at the same time, greatly enhancing safety, reliability, well-being, efficiency, and quality.
