Screening systems
Brackett Green offers Dual Flow and Central Flow screens with fine mesh sizes of 1 to 3 mm. The screens allow zero debris carry-over and seals prevent bypassing of debris, which can improve the performance of membrane filtration systems. The company also manufactures a patented mesh for wastewater filtration commonly referred to as the ProPaPanel® as it is the proper panel to use for wastewater filtration. The filter avoids hair pinning or stapling of fibrous material that fouls perforated plate, wedge wire and woven wire mesh.

Low fouling membrane
Hydranautics has introduced the new LFC3 low fouling membrane technology. The new membrane uses the same hydrophilic chemistry of the LFC1 (low fouling composite) membrane, but meets the requirements of high salt rejection applications. The LFC3 combines low fouling membrane chemistry with high efficiency flow and rejection characteristics, offering 99.6% salt rejection at 9,500 gpd. This membrane is suited for the treatment of difficult feedwaters which up to now required significant pretreatment prior to subjecting them to any composite RO membrane.

Chlorine resistant membranes
USFilter has incorporated an intermediate packing density chlorine resistant membrane to its Memcor® CMF-S and Memcor® CMF systems. The Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF) membrane is an oxidant tolerant material. Use of the material allows for pre-oxidized feeds, filtration of feeds containing high iron or manganese, or coagulated feed when a ferric-based coagulant is specified.

Membrane filter monitor
O'Keefe Electronics has developed the Intelligent Membrane Monitor and Manager (im3). The new monitor is designed to increase membrane life, reduce operating costs, increase system efficiency, and reduce labor. One of the greatest concerns in membrane filter operations is the failure to clean the membrane on a routine basis. The result is reduced life for the membranes as they deteriorate prematurely and are damaged beyond repair. The im3 monitors permeate flow and notifies operators when a membrane should be cleaned. Once the membrane is cleaned, the monitor determines when it should be placed back into service.

Immersed membrane filtration
The ZeeWeed® immersed membrane filtration system from Zenon is ideal for reverse osmosis pretreatment. It consistently yields a silt density index (SDI) less than 3, regardless of the influent total suspended solids (TSS) and SDI. Through an enhanced coagulation process, the system also reduces raw water total organic carbon (TOC) up to 90%, further improving the performance of the RO system.

Membrane bioreactor
Enviroquip has introduced a membrane bioreactor (MBR) that reduces plant footprint, produces quality effluent, and requires little maintenance. By operating at MLSS concentrations between 15,000 and 30,000 mg/L, the footprint of a conventional plant is often reduced by 50% or more. Classified as microfiltration, the average membrane pore size is 0.4 microns. However, the formation of a thin biofilm reduces the effective pore size to 0.1 microns, generally resulting in six-log bacteria removal.

Pre-filtration systems
Filtronics has introduced EM-Pure membrane systems designed with Hyper-Filtration pre-filtration. The systems consist of membrane selections which carry ANSI 58 and California Department of Health Services approvals. Systems for municipal drinking water applications include ultra-filtration for surface water treatment and groundwater under the influence. They feature over a 5 log removal of pathogens, including giardia, cryptosporidium, viruses and bacteria, exceeding the requirements of SWTR, USEPA and DWI regulations. The pre-filtration units substantially reduce the requirements for membrane cleaning and reduce outputs from high turbidity raw water spikes during rainy or high run-off periods.

Scale inhibitor
American Water Chemicals offers its A-102 Plus antiscalant, which inhibits inorganic scale formation and disperses iron and insoluble silica precipitation in membrane separation processes. Sulfuric acid pretreatment can be eliminated in most cases when the product is used. Calcium carbonate scaling can be controlled up to a +2.6 concentrate LSI by an average dosage of 1 to 4 mg/L of the product. A-102 Plus is ANSI/NSF Standard 60 certified and approved by major membrane manufacturers.

Membrane contactors
Celgard Inc. has announced the commercialization of Liqui-Cel® 6 x 28 Membrane Contactors. The contactors are primarily used for adding or removing O2, CO2 and N2 to or from water. The new contactor is the only integrally potted membrane contactor device manufactured in this large of a diameter. The integral potting has allowed the elastomeric o-ring seals to be eliminated. The contactor is designed to handle flow rates of 5-50 gpm in a single unit. Larger flow rates can be accommodated by piping multiple devices in parallel. The contactors are rated to 105 psig at 77 degrees F. The membrane cartridge is integrally potted into ABS and the contactors are manufactured with FDA compliant materials.
