SCADA system security
A new report from Bristol Babcock, "Water Security: The Role of the SCADA System," explains how SCADA systems can be used in the water industry for security purposes. Since SCADA systems already exist in most water operations, implementing additional security measures is relatively easy. Security equipment, including video cameras, motion detectors, contact switches, keyless entry devices and card readers can be interfaced either directly to the SCADA network or via a nearby RTU.

Statistical process control tools
OPS Systems announces the release of version 2.6.2 of OPS 32 operations software. Among the many enhancements are new statistical routines, including the Grubbs test for outliers and detection of QC abnormalities such as seven consecutive values above or below the mean, or five consecutive values sloping in the same direction. These abnormalities often signal that something has changed and the cause needs to be investigated. For example: The dilution water for BOD testing should be tested for contamination. The battery in a process instrument may be loosing charge. The membrane in your process DO meter needs to be changed.

Ozone control
To meet customer demands and new regulatory requirements limiting the maximum contamination level (MCL) of bromate in drinking water, Osmonics has significantly improved the ozone production control capability of its E-Series Ozone Generator. The generator now controls ozone production to the nearest 0.3 percent, compared to 6.25 percent in the past. This gives customers more precise ozone production control, helping to limit the amount of bromate created as a byproduct of ozone disinfection. By improving ozone generation control and increasing the number of possible control steps from 16 to over 300, the E-Series generator is able to deliver virtually continuous linear control capability.

Data management
To get the most out of SCADA systems, cities face the challenge of channeling SCADA-monitored data to key decision-makers. Now, with the implementation of the eDNA real-time data historian solution, which will interface with any commercial SCADA system, SCADA-monitored data can be collected, stored and made available in real-time. The software serves as an enterprise data historian. It was developed by Industrial Peer-to-Peer LLC, a subsidiary of InStep Software. The system captures, archives and time-stamps the mountains of historical and real-time T&D data, including flow rates, pressures, and water quality. eDNA integrates with other enterprise systems and makes time-sensitive data accessible - via the Web - throughout an organization.

H2S control
ADI International Inc. has released a new, low-cost means of addressing hydrogen sulfide in biogas. By blowing biogas through a filter vessel containing Media G2®, the company's patented iron-oxide coated filter media, up to 99.99% of H2S is removed. With a one minute contact time, concentrations as high as 30,000 ppm have been reduced to below 1 ppm. H2S-saturated media can be regenerated simply by blowing air through it. H2S released to air during regeneration is negligible, since the process converts it to elemental sulfur and water. At least 15 regenerations are possible, during which the media will adsorb over 50% of its weight in H2S.
