Polymer dosing monitor

Degremont Technologies’ Thermylis™ High Temperature Fluid Bed has been used as a disposal method for wastewater treatment biosolids for over 40 years. It is a safe, sustainable and eco-friendly technology. In the thermal oxidizer, water is evaporated and organic materials are combusted, eliminating odors and reducing the biosolids volume to a much smaller quantity of inert ash. The ash can be reused for several applications, such as cover in conventional landfill or as road base and other construction material. The fluid-like behavior offered by this technology promotes turbulence without moving parts, optimizing both heat and mass transfers.

Enviroquip, a division of Eimco Water Technologies, has combined its expertise in solids processing with Kubota membrane technology to create its line of membrane thickeners (MBTs). The package system is designed to be a free-standing sludge thickener coupled with a sludge holding tank or digester which is available for immediate installation at new or existing treatment plants to increase the capacity of sludge processing and storage tanks.

The Ultra Mag® Wastewater Flow Meter from McCrometer is designed to operate in treated wastewater or even sludge or slurries. With its non-invasive, no-moving parts flow sensing technology, the inline magmeter delivers measurement accuracy of +0.5 percent in water effluent with repeatability of +0.05 percent. The meter measures liquid flow in 2 to 36 inch lines from 0.2 to 49 fps at pressures of up to 300 psi, depending on the selected flange configuration. Manufactured with 316 stainless steel, the meter’s electrodes feature a unique bullet-shaped design that is self-cleaning.
The Moyno® 2000 HS System is an alternative to piston pumps and open conveyors for dewatered sludge transfer in municipal wastewater treatment. It features an integral hopper with a twin-screw auger feeder and a Moyno G4 progressing cavity pump that handles semi-dry, high solids, dewatered municipal sludge to over 50 percent solids. The system can pump filter cake further distances with higher volumetric efficiencies than any other progressing cavity pump. Its twin-screw feeder supplies a constant, pressurized feed rate to the pump resulting in a 100 percent pump cavity fill rate. The design of the patented Ultra-Feed® pump rotor head further contributes to volumetric efficiency.
Suspended solids meter
Users can measure the concentration of sludges or slurries without the reading being affected by color using the Markland Model 502 Suspended Solids Meter. The meter can be used in drinking water plants to measure the concentration of the backwash sludge from sand or membrane filters before it is sent for further processing. In wastewater treatment plants it is used to measure primary, secondary and return activated sludges.

Sludge blanket monitoring
Hach’s Sonatax sc sludge blanket level monitoring system optimizes sludge extraction, manages recirculation, and warns of potential solids washouts that may result in permit violations. The probe stays clean by using a magnetic coupled wiper that wipes the face of the probe. The wiper functions with a magnetic connection and without a shaft so there are no o-rings to replace and no need to open the probe housing. The ultrasonic probe automatically scans a range of frequencies to find the ideal settings for the solids concentration for the application. Built-in software can disregard signals reflected from tank structures such as pipes, rods, etc. The sludge level in the tank is then graphically displayed on the controller screen.
Patterson Pump’s Forceline® NCS Series non-clog sewage pumps are offered with a sealing arrangement which requires no flush water. This technology features EnviroSeal’s SpiralTrac® throat bushing and Chesterton’s Model 442™ split mechanical seals, and provides substantial savings in areas of maintenance and seal flush water. In addition to savings on initial installation and long term costs associated with having to flush the stuffing box, maintenance can now be performed to the seal and stuffing box without taking the pump out of service.

Ammonia removal, recovery
ThermoEnergy has released an engineering study demonstrating that the company’s Ammonia Recovery Process (“ARP”) can provide a substantial reduction in carbon emissions for municipal wastewater treatment plants versus conventional biological methods for the treatment and removal of nitrogen/ammonia. The report by Parsons-Brinckerhoff shows that a generic 100 mgd wastewater treatment plant can expect greenhouse gas emission reductions in the range of 3,000 and 5,000 tons a year. The physical/chemical process converts ammonia from wastewater streams into ammonium sulfate; a commercial grade fertilizer used by agriculture around the world. The compact size of the process allows it to be retrofitted into existing wastewater treatment plants, making it a solution for plants seeking treatment in already limited spaces.

Sludge level monitoring
The Pulsar “Sludge Finder” is a reliable solution for measuring and controlling sludge interface in primary or secondary clarifiers. Operating ultrasonically through liquid, the system uses echo algorithms to identify the sludge blanket level. The transducer is immersed in the liquid, emitting a high frequency sound pulse down towards the interface. The pulse reflects from the denser material back to the transducer face for echo processing. It is a low-cost, four channel system with individual 4-20mA outputs and relays. It uses a unique self-cleaning wiper-blade for reduced maintenance.

Red Valve’s Series 5200 Control Pinch Valve is designed to provide accurate, repeatable control of abrasive and corrosive slurries. The resilient elastomer sleeve produces a smooth venturi flow path that outlasts gate, plug, ball and even stellite-coated control valves. The reinforced elastomer sleeve is the only wetted part of the valve, eliminating the need for packing, valve seats and mechanical parts. A cone sleeve trim is most commonly used in throttling applications for tighter control and better rangeability.

The Rotamix Process Mixing System from Vaughan uses state of the art solids handling equipment and technology for mixing of digesters, sludge storage tanks, sludge blend tanks, equalization basins and anoxic zones. The company’s Chopper Pump combined with an analyzed placement of fixed position glass lined mixing assemblies provides dual-zone mixing with a vertical-axis vortex, assuring uniform mixing velocities throughout a tank or basin. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Analysis confirms optimum mixing performance before the installation, while process testing re-affirms an even distribution of solids once the installation is complete.
Kruger’s Solia™ process combines two tried and true methods of sludge treatment, air drying and aerobic fermentation, to enhance sludge drying efficiency. Sludge is stored in a greenhouse environment, where solar radiation is used for drying. The sludge is maintained in an aerobic state and turned regularly. The energy released by the oxidation of the biomass increases the drying efficiency. The process provides a cost-effective and environmentally friendly method of treating waste biosolids.
New 96" and 120" Fiberglass Sump and Sewage Basins are now available from Topp Industries. They are the largest inside diameters the company has ever offered. The company’s basins are manufactured to ASTM D3753 and the entire line of basins now offers inside diameters ranging from 18" to 120", with other diameters available upon request. The company offers these new basins in varying heights to meet specific applications and one-piece tanks are available as deep as 35'. The 96" basins provide capacities from 3,008 to 7,520 gallons, while the capacities of the 120" diameter basins range from 4,700 to 11,750 gallons.

High pressure couplings
Victaulic designed the Style 808 Double Groove Coupling for use in high pressure systems. The coupling was developed in response to industry needs for a reliable high-pressure coupling particularly for solids applications. They engage directly into double grooved pipe without the need for special weld-on nipples or collars. The couplings are excellent for applications such as high-pressure slurry and sludge piping.
Fluid Dynamics has introduced a new explosion-proof polymer makedown system for preparation, activation and injection of liquid polymers in water and wastewater treatment applications. The system can produce dilute solution (0.1% - 2.0%) at capacities from 20 gph to 3,000 gph of total makedown solution. The explosion-proof system features all stainless steel construction. It uses the patented “Gatlin Mixer” for mechanical mixing and blending of polymer material.

Sludge layer detection
The ORCA Sonar Series, available from Hawk Measurement, offers seven different sonar transducer frequencies for density interface detection. This “third generation” sonar system allows users to select the appropriate frequency according to the density of the interface that is being controlled and monitored (Primary, Sedimentation, or Thickener). Rather than reflecting small signals of 300 millivolts off the desired density interface, the device range reflects signals as large as 2500 millivolts because of its optimization of the sonar transducer frequency.

Chemineer’s portable DT mixers are engineered for handling applications in many markets, including polymers and water treatment.
