Recently the E.H. Wachs Co. assisted a water works utility complete the insertion of two new 24 inch water main valves into an existing water distribution pipeline. The pipeline had been the source of a serious leak, and the water utility realized that it had insufficient valves to isolate the leak without shutting off a large critical service area of the water distribution system.

Because the utility received negative press coverage from the recent piping failure, management wanted to accomplish the new valve insertion very quickly to minimize the negative effects of a second water outage. They sought the help of the E.H. Wachs to make the cuts necessary for the valve installation.

The water mains were cast iron, 24 inches in diameter and one inch thick. Prior to the shut down, Wachs technicians installed four LCSF 22-28 Split Frame pipe cutting machines. Completion of the four simultaneous cuts was accomplished in less than 20 minutes.

As the water drained from the isolated pipeline utility workers removed the cut out pipes and prepared the new valves for installation. Meanwhile, E.H. Wachs technicians cut new pipe to length for fit up and installation of the water main valves.

The job was completed ahead of schedule with no complaints from the local community.

The LCSF - Low Clearance Split Frame - machines need minimal excavation to mount around piping systems. In emergency or critical circumstances, the machine’s fast set up and operation combined with precise cut off capabilities can reduce service down time.

LCSF machines and other Wachs Utility Products are available for sale or rent. Rental machines can be reserved for planned maintenance or dispatched immediately for emergency repairs from the company’s 24 hour on-call service. Technical assistance can be contracted or supported by a local Wachs field representative.

The E.H. Wachs Co. provides pipe cutting equipment and services to water distribution utilities throughout the world. To learn more specific information about Split Frame pipe cutting applications visit the company’s website at www.wachsco.com.
