USFilter Envirex Products recently obtained ANSI/NSF Standard 61 certification for its Rex® HS730 “Loop Chain” composite collector chain for water treatment plants. The high-strength polymeric collector chain is attached to flights that move across the bottom of a rectangular tank, collecting settled solids. The Loop Chain is specifically designed for tanks over 200 feet long that experience higher-than-normal loading.

The HS730 collector chain is a high-strength, non-metallic design with a working load of 4,500 lbs and a minimum ultimate strength of 20,000 lbs. Plants with existing chain and scraper systems can easily upgrade to this particular collector chain design, as it is compatible with many lower capacity chain components already in place.

The USFilter chain and scraper sludge collector system is suitable for water plant service, as well as for primary and secondary wastewater and storm water collection at treatment plants.

Benefits

Non-metallic collector chains are durable, lightweight, non-corrosive and chemical-resistant. The chains are also easy to install, operate and maintain.

Harold Gies, mechanical supervisor at Los Angeles’ Hyperion Wastewater Treatment Plant, confirms that converting to the new, non-metallic system has saved considerable maintenance staff hours. And the collectors and flights’ light weight has significantly reduced the number of personnel and the time required to maintain the primary collector systems.

NSF Certification

Standard 61 certification addresses crucial aspects of drinking water system components, namely whether contaminants that leach or migrate from the product/material into drinking water are above acceptable levels in finished waters. The standard addresses possible health effects of treatment chemicals and related impurities that are considered contaminants for evaluation purposes.

“The certification signifies the collector chain can safely treat drinking water,” said Bill Selle, P.E., chain products technical manager for USFilter. “The Loop Chain is just one of many rectangular collector chain and scraper components from USFilter that are ANSI/NSF Standard 61 certified.”

The NSF/ANSI Standard 61 certification of the Rex HS730 collector chain marks the final Envirex chain and scraper component to comply with this important public health and safety standard. At this time, USFilter Envirex Products is the only supplier to provide a complete chain and scraper system that is NSF/ANSI Standard 61 certified.
