EMU pumps from USFilter's Davis Products minimize submersible pump failure due to the inability of seals to prevent intrusion of surrounding liquid.

Enclosed block pump seals

EMU pumps from USFilter's Davis Products minimize submersible pump failure due to the inability of seals to prevent intrusion of surrounding liquid. Through advanced proprietary technology, both the upper and lower sets of mechanical seals are located inside a precision engineered Enclosed Block Seal (EBS). This allows on-site servicing because each set of seals are "factory set" with correct spring pressure, requiring no field modifications or adjustments. To replace the EBS requires removing the heat exchanger, replacing the EBS, and re-installing the heat exchanger. No special spring force tools or other technical field assembly are required to guarantee correct positioning and location within the pump. Springs and housing are all 316 stainless steel for maximum durability.

Pump control system

The Depth ChargerTM Retractable Pump Control System from CSI Controls is built on a 360° backplate, maximizing space for everything needed to control up to a 5 hp pump and related accessories. The backplate can be removed for service simply by loosening a set screw. The entire system is below ground when retracted, using available space in the top section of the basin. No posts or traditional control enclosures are above ground, which offers improved aesthetics in addition to protection from weather and vandals. In the event that a station floods, the entire NEMA 6 enclosure floats out of the basin like a piston, signaling the system failure condition and removing the control from submergence.

Submetering system

ABB Water Meters has introduced the InsideRTM Radio System, a wireless radio frequency meter reading system for multi-unit submetering. Developed with Inovonics Corporation, the unit incorporates an FCC certified transmitter into the register of the C-700 positive displacement water meter. This eliminates the need for any wiring between the meter and transmitter, reducing installation costs. The frequency hopping spread spectrum transmitter operates in the 902 to 928 MHz frequency range and requires no license. Existing C-700 meters are convertible to the system by replacing the existing meter register with the InsideR register.

The new Model 4460 non-intrusive, programmable flow-captor from weber Sensors measures flow of liquid media, using a calorimetric principle pioneered by the company. The unit is a dual function system, measuring both flow and temperature simultaneously. It measures flow volumes with very high accuracy even at low flow rates. The programmable unit offers two isolated flow set points and one isolated temperature set point, as well as linearized analog outputs (4-20 mA) for each. The unit is designed to be easily programmed, self-contained, compact and rugged for measuring flows of clean or dirty water, oil, grease, pastes, sludge and all varieties of aggressive media.

FBC Technologies introduced the Bio2Bloc system. The fixed-film microbiology system is comprised of a multitude of floating modules. Each module comes equipped with two diffusion systems, a fine-bubble system to nourish the media bed, and a high-pressure coarse bubble system that periodically flushes and clears the media bed. A shore-mounted blower aerates the system eliminating electrical hook-up in the water. The system installs in a single day using a backhoe.

Small footprint system

When space for the odor control system is limited, NuTech's QCIDTM may be the solution. Requiring only 1 square foot of floor space for each 900 cfm of airflow, the QCID, which stands for "quick contact in duct," has a very small footprint. The contact section is only 54" high. The system is designed to treat nuisance type oxidized wastewater odors and odors with 1 ppm or less H2S at the inlet to the QCID.

Snap ring filter bag

Hayward's new QVA (Quality, Value, Alternative) filter bag is easier to use for liquid filtering applications than ordinary filter bags because the side seam in the bag is welded, rather than sewn. There is virtually no extra fabric to bunch up around the snap ring. Without the bump of extra material in the sealing area, the bag can be seated in the filter vessel faster and more reliably. The bags are constructed with polypropylene or polyester needle felt. They come in standard sizes in both single and double lengths, and offer micron ratings from 1 to 200.

Controllers

Antx has enhanced the DiaLog Elite to provide users with easy-to-use control schemes. Users now can specify multiple conditions for analog and digital inputs to turn on and off designated relays to control equipment and improve efficiency without having to add complicated and expensive PLCs. The addition of these controls combines the features of an alarm notification device, a remote telemetry unit (RTU) and a controller into a single small package. Previously users had to purchase a small PLC to build dedicated control circuits and then add an alarm dialer. Not only has the PLC been eliminated, but the unit allows a user to alter the control scheme either from the integral keypad or with a phone call.

Medium voltage drive

Robicon has released the compact new Gen 3 Perfect Harmony medium voltage drive. In this new system, the company has integrated the drive with the isolation transformer to offer a 30% to 50% smaller footprint than standard drives. The drive is an all-in-one, factory prewired and tested system. Nearly 50% of its footprint reduction is due to its air-cooled transformer, mounted on its end. In addition, users save money for cabling, which can be costly to shield and protect. The number of power cells has been reduced from 15 to 12 by increasing the voltage of an individual IGBT cell from 1,200V to 1,400V. Cost reductions have been achieved by configuring the drive with several low-voltage IGBTs, which is less expensive than the traditional high-voltage power device approach.

The Type CL-10DJI Dynatrol® Interface Level Switch from Automation Products has been designed for level detection of interfaces between a liquid and a settled bed of solids. The switch is mounted through a 3/4" half-coupling at the point of desired level detection. The probe, when not covered, is free to vibrate, producing an output signal that indicates a low level exists. When the probe is covered with solid material, a damping of the oscillations occurs and the relay indicates a high level exists. The On/Off signal operates a SPDT relay to activate alarms, indicator lights or process control equipment.

System software

Systems & Software has recently added electronic functionality to the CIS portion of its MUPS (Municipal & Utility Package Software) suite to create an interface with third-party hand-held and AMR devices and its Customer Information and Utility Billing application modules. This interface helps utilities provide better customer service, reduce operational costs, and improve billing integrity. Now, from the field, workers can automatically create and transfer work orders based on condition codes such as illegal consumption. For example, if a reading from a vacant account shows any type of activity, a work order is automatically generated to determine why water is being consumed at the premises. This reduces theft of services and costly disputes over period use by new occupants. Another benefit of this electronic functionality is paperless fieldwork. Work orders such as meter exchanges, repairs, and maintenance can be transferred electronically to and from units in trucks.
