ST. LOUIS, March 29, 2005 -- Affholder, Inc., a subsidiary of Insituform Technologies Inc., has received an award for outstanding contract performance from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District.

The company received the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers award in recognition of its work on a sewer rehabilitation project for Metropolitan Sewer District of St. Louis. The Army Corps of Engineers made federal funding available to MSD to cover about 75% of the $4 million project.

The project included rehabilitation of 3,168 feet of pipe extending along Vandeventer Avenue to Grand Avenue in south St. Louis. The project encompasses grouting, installation of a concrete invert, and application of shotcrete -- a process of spraying concrete or mortar -- to the existing sewer to fill voids and repair connections. Portions of the sewer constructed more than 100 years ago are 14 feet wide by 12 feet high, up to 18 feet wide by 15 feet high.

The award recognized Affholder's quality control testing, which exceeded the specification requirements of the project. Also recognized were Affholder's compliance with labor standards and effective safety management. The project involved 50,000 working hours, which Affholder completed with no lost-time accidents.

"It is a significant accomplishment on any project to have 25 workers working 50,000 hours with no lost-time accidents," said Mike Badgley, area manager for Affholder. "Everyone who worked on this project deserves recognition for the safety performance."

The original job bid was for structural repairs only. After work began, however, the Corps of Engineers determined that one section of the sewer required a stand-alone structural insert to provide sufficient reduction in the possibility of a future collapse. The time allowed for the project was extended to allow for construction and placement of the stand-alone component. Affholder completed the project within the revised schedule.

Affholder Inc. uses tunneling methods to perform trenchless installations of new pipelines. Affholder also provides a wide range of trenchless pipe rehabilitation services, including pipejacking, shotcrete and sliplining, throughout North America.

Insituform Technologies Inc. (www.insituform.com) is a leading worldwide provider of proprietary technologies and services for rehabilitating sewer, water and other underground piping systems without digging and disruption.
