LOS ANGELES, Aug. 1, 2005 (PRNewswire) -- Thermal Remediation Services (TRS) was awarded a multi-million dollar award for the implementation of the electrical resistance heating (ERH) technology at the Pemaco Superfund Site in Los Angeles County, Calif. TRS was selected through a Best Value Evaluation Process that included extensive review by a distinguished group of professionals including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 9, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the EPA Kerr Laboratory, the EPA Technology Assessment Branch and TN & Associates.

The EPA's choice of TRS is a confirmation that the Technology is now a recognized leader in cleaning up difficult sites.

Jim Cummings, from the EPA Technology Assessment Branch, states, "Region 9 is to be commended for selecting and implementing Electrical Resistance Heating to address the source of contamination at the Pemaco NPL site. Electrical Resistance Heating has been used sufficiently in the U.S. and overseas to address chlorinated volatile organic compounds such as those found at the Pemaco site that we expect excellent performance from this technology as part of the remedy to restore the groundwater resource and protect human health and the environment."

The Pemaco Site is the first Superfund site where a Record of Decision (ROD) for the use of ERH has been approved.

After an extensive review of remedial technologies and strategies the distinguished group chose ERH as the primary technology for the remediation of the Pemaco source area and a ROD was approved by the USEPA in January of 2005.

This cleanup project is focused on remediation of trichloroethene (TCE) in soil and groundwater. The project is set to begin with initial design elements and operation logistics beginning in September of 2005, with a project completion forecast set at August of 2006.

Thermal Remediation Services (www.thermalrs.com) is a Washington-based corporation that specializes in providing in situ electrical resistance heating services throughout North America. As the nationwide leader and most experienced ERH provider, TRS employees have been involved in the completion of 35 of the estimated 42 ERH projects implemented in the United States, including the largest and most complex ERH. Since 2000, TRS has grown to 20 staff members and the largest ERH specialty equipment fleet in the world.
