New technology removes contaminants from wastewater plants
FORT LAUDERDALE, FL, Aug. 3, 2005 (Business Wire) -- Solucorp Industries Ltd.'s wholly-owned subsidiary WITS Inc. has successfully installed its patented electrocoagulation system into the Town of Keysville's wastewater treatment plant. WITS' selection for this project was made by F.L. Showalter, Inc., the general contractor.
The company's electrocoagulation technology was specified for copper removal from the Keysville waste stream by B&B Consultants, a Virginia-based engineering firm which had conducted an extensive review of its capabilities. This proprietary technology utilizes electrocoagulation to remove contaminants from wastewater. Although electrocoagulation has been utilized for almost 100 years, WITS' patents focus on proprietary technologies that refine the process to increase contamination removal. The system costs less to install and lowers daily operating costs while eliminating environmental problems such as metals pollution which are encountered when using biological wastewater treatment systems.
Electrocoagulation is a process based on the use of strong electric fields and electrically induced oxidation and reduction reactions. This process can in most cases take out more than 99% of heavy metals and is also able to kill microorganisms in the wastewater. It's also able to precipitate charged colloids (organics and inorganics) and remove significant amounts of other ions (heavy metals) colloids and emulsions. This contract marks the first for the Solucorp unit that uses the company's proprietary new plate and frame chamber design, which in addition to other cost benefits simplifies maintenance and cleaning.
The installation of this system took place on July 27 and serves as a model to be utilized for sale of similar units to the wastewater treatment industry.
Solucorp president Richard Runco states, "Solucorp/WITS offers a turn key solution to private companies and municipal, state, federal, and governmental agencies experiencing wastewater contamination and all other metal pollution problems in the air and soil."
WITS Inc., founded in 2001, has developed a proprietary line of electrocoagulation products that provide advantages in most of the wastewater/waste treatment sectors. In addition to pricing advantages, the WITS EC system produces a better water end result while using fewer harmful chemicals. The major water/wastewater areas where the WITS technology can be utilized with significant benefits includes water utilities; wastewater utilities; sludge processing; combined sewer overflows; industrial pretreatment; offshore oil rigs; livestock industry and in food processing plants.
Solucorp Industries Ltd. (www.solucorpltd.com) consists of WITS Inc., Solucorp and Integrated Fixation System Co., three companies involved in the environmental remediation industry. Solucorp's patented Molecular Bonding System (MBS®) technology can clean up and treat wastes where heavy metals are present by chemically binding those metals so that they won't leach and contaminate the groundwater. This technology has been used on the East Coast in states including New York, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. It's also presented in a periodical produced by the EPA titled Superfund Innovative Technology Evaluation ("SITE") Program, Technology Profiles Edition, and Demonstration Program. The Integrated Fixation System (IFS) technology developed from Solucorp's participation in this program deals with pollution prevention rather than existing contamination problems. It can be integrated into many types of product applications, preventing future contamination from heavy metals such as lead, mercury, arsenic, chromium (hex or tri), cadmium, zinc, nickel, selenium, antimony, barium, beryllium, silver, thallium and vanadium. It also can be applied through a number of delivery systems both as solids and non-solid. The solid compound delivery systems include, for example blocks, tablets, spikes and flakes. Some examples of non-solid delivery systems include laminates, inks, pastes powders, gels, and slurries. For more information, visit the EPA website (www.epa.gov) and type in the New Search Space, "Molecular Bonding System."
