Two Sandia technology soon to be checking for toxins in nation's water supplies
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Two technologies developed at the National Nuclear Security Administration's Sandia National Laboratories are expected to soon be checking for toxins and harmful bacteria in the nation's water supplies. Both are based on the microChemLab. The microChemLab, officially called microChemLab, is a hand-held "chemistry laboratory." The liquid prototype was designed and built at Sandia/California, while the microChemLab that takes measurements in the gas phase was developed at Sandia/New Mexico. Complete with the microChemLab, electronics, and sample collector, both devices weigh about 25 pounds and fit into a box the size of a small suitcase. The only external parts of the two sensor technologies are water collectors. The units are completely portable...

Groundwater sampling goes tubular at Wash.'s Hanford Reach
RICHLAND, WA, Sept. 27, 2005 -- "Leave No Trace" is a popular ethic for outdoor recreationists who advocate a natural landscape. Now, it's also applicable to groundwater sampling collection sites along the Columbia River in southeastern Washington state. Hydrologists from the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory are using a simple apparatus of ¼-inch-diameter plastic tubing to collect samples at varying levels in the aquifer along the river's edge. Though a permanent installation, the low-cost, lightweight materials are easy to camouflage with indigenous rocks and vegetation so that the collection site appears undisturbed...

The company has now obtained natural gas at current spot prices from other providers and has restarted the Fortier facility. Inexpensive polymer beads are molecularly imprinted to match the physical shape of MTBE molecules. When contaminated water comes in contact with the molecularly imprinted polymer beads (MIPS), the MTBE molecules adhere to the MIPS removing MTBE from the water...
