ATLANTA, GA, June 16, 2005 -- The Georgia Water and Pollution Control Association recognized Delta Air Lines' Industrial Wastewater Treatment Facility with an environmental award during the GW&PCA annual Industrial Conference held in Atlanta.
The facility is located at Delta's Technical Operations Center in Atlanta, Georgia, and is contract operated by Woodard & Curran.
The 1-mgd oily wastewater treatment system, which serves Delta's Technical Operations Center, was recognized with a Certificate of Environmental Achievement in the Indirect Discharge, Biological Treatment category, receiving an outstanding rating for its 100% permit compliance record in 2004. The award also recognized the plant's exemplary health and safety record, emergency action plans, maintenance management program, operations and management plans, and operator certification levels.
The pretreatment facility also received GW&PCA Gold Awards for 100% compliance for the oily wastewater treatment system as well as for treatment plants operated at both of Delta's Ground Support Equipment Facilities, also operated by Woodard & Curran.
The plating shop, which discharges wastewater to the Industrial Wastewater Treatment Facility, was recognized with a Facility of the Year award for its pollution prevention efforts and reduction of water use. Working with the Pollution Prevention Assistance Division of Georgia's Environmental Protection Division, the plating shop was able to reduce water usage by 40 to 50%. Water was reduced through upgrades, operator training, repair of conductivity instruments, and instrument calibration.
