WARRENDALE, PA, Oct. 28, 2005 -- The Siemens Group Industrial Solutions & Services reported Oct. 4 that it was awarded a contract to provide equipment and systems to New York City, at the Carmel Sanitary District #4 Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP). The plant upgrade is part of a long-term, billion dollar watershed protection program that will safeguard New York City's drinking water supply, in part, through upgrades to regional publicly- and privately-owned WWTPs. Such plants are now complied by the I&S company USFilter, of Warrendale, with new design, construction and operation standards detailed in the recent Watershed Memorandum of Agreement between the watershed communities, city, state, EPA and environmentalists.

The Carmel Sanitary District #4 WWTP is located 60 miles north of New York City, and is one of several watershed program plant upgrades that use USFilter's Hydro-Clear filters and Memcor low pressure membrane technology, or other USFilter systems and equipment. One or more USFilter technologies are also operating or under construction at the Reed Farm WWTP, Clearpool WWTP, Brewster WWTP, Brewster Heights WWTP, and the I-684 Rest Area.

At the heart of the new USFilter system at the Carmel Sanitary District #4 WWTP is a stainless steel, Hydro-Clear® rapid sand filter, followed by a Memcor Continuous Microfiltration (CMF) membrane system. The combined system will treat up to 440,000 GPD, mitigating turbidity, solids, nutrient and pathogen contamination in the regional water supply. The Hydro-Clear filter uses a shallow 10-inch bed of 0.45 mm sand to remove suspended solids from the upstream aeration/clarification process. It also has a unique Chem-Clean system to handle oil and grease present in municipal wastewater. Ultimately, this expands membrane system performance by reducing membrane fouling and maximizing run time between backwashing and chemical cleaning.

The Memcor technology uses a proven built-in integrity test that detects broken membrane fibers which helps positively validate the entire system to over 4-log removal of Giardia lamblia and Cryptosporidium. These pathogens can cause severe illness or death if ingested by humans. The Memcor technology, along with upstream chemical addition, also achieves phosphorus limits of 0.5 mg/L or less. Other USFilter equipment used at the Carmel Sanitary District #4 WWTP includes a rapid mix and flocculation system and clarification and post aeration equipment.

USFilter worked closely with contractor BMJ Construction, Inc. of Yonkers, N.Y., and O'Brien & Gere Engineers, Hawthorne, N.Y. on the Carmel project.

USFilter is represented in the local area by G.P. Jager & Associates, Inc., Paramus, N.J., and Envirolutions, Inc., Bridgewater, N.J.
