WILMINGTON, MA, May 18, 2005 -- Koch Membrane Systems Inc. (KMS), a global developer and manufacturer of innovative membrane filtration systems, has been selected to provide ultrafiltration equipment under a contract with BMJ Construction Company Inc., of Yonkers, N.Y., to upgrade the Mt. Ebo Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) in the town of Southeast in Putnam County, about an hour north of New York City.

Ben Tenori, president and owner of BMJ Construction, said, "We chose KMS because they were responsive and offered competitive pricing. We are looking forward to working on additional projects of this type in the future."

Two fully redundant compact membrane filtration package plant systems are installed on site and are ready for start up. The membrane filters and equipment designed by Koch Membrane Systems will provide tertiary polishing of effluent from the WWTP of a condominium community. Current operation of the Mt. Ebo WWTP includes primary settling, biological contactors, clarification and gravity sand filtration. Permitted discharge flow from the Mt. Ebo WWTP is 160,000 gpd (gallons per day).

Membrane filtration and ultraviolet disinfection have been added in the upgrade for removal of turbidity, suspended solids and pathogenic contamination, including Giardia, Cryptosporidium and virus. The membrane system is required to achieve a 3-log removal of Giardia and a turbidity of less than 0.5 NTU.

The two skid-mounted systems consist of low-pressure, polymeric, PMPWTM hollow fiber membrane cartridges mounted on process manifolds, along with the necessary tanks, controls, valves and piping. The robust PMPW membrane has an extremely small pore size and will act as a barrier to pathogens. Because it will tolerate a wide pH range and is resistant to chlorine, the PMPW membrane is easy to clean. The self-contained package system is completely frame-mounted, SCADA-compatible and pre-wired, with field connections kept to a minimum. Skid operation is highly automated, requiring minimal operator attention. BMJ Construction has been in the business of building plants for water and wastewater treatment since 1984. According to Joe Primiano, owner of BMJ Construction Company, "The KMS equipment was well designed and very easy to install."

The upgrade of the Mt. Ebo WWTP will conform to the NYC/DEP Watershed Memorandum of Agreement that provides multi-million dollar project funding to protect the NYC Watershed, in part by upgrading municipal wastewater treatment plants that are operated in watershed communities.

For over 30 years, Koch Membrane Systems Inc. (www.kochmembrane.com) has been a global leader in development, manufacturing, distribution, and service of advanced membranes and systems for large-scale uses in a broad range of industries.
