DALLAS (Dec. 23, 2015) — The Southwest division of McCarthy Building Companies Inc. in a joint venture with Black & Veatch was recently awarded a contract by the Trinity River Authority of Texas for the solids process improvements at the 162-MGD Central Regional Wastewater System in Dallas. The $152 million project, which focuses on overall comprehensive biosolids improvements, will utilize a thermal hydrolysis/ anaerobic digestion process to break down biosolids for significant reduction in biosolids quantity leaving the plant with the added potential for beneficial reuse in the future. This anaerobicdigestion process will require construction of three new digesters and associated ancillary processes.
“This thermal hydrolysis treatment process is only the second plant like it in the country, the first in Texas, having also an added benefit by creating a more robust methane production, providing for the future opportunity of a combined heat and power expansionproject. This treatment process will significantly reduce the volume of solid waste produced from the plant,” said Tracy Kimnach, project director at McCarthy.
CDM Smith, the engineer for the project, designed a comparable thermal hydrolysis installation in Washington, D.C. This is TRA’s first alternative delivery project. “As the Construction Manager at Risk, our goal is to optimize project delivery by maximizing cost and schedule savings while ensuring the quality is delivered throughout this project,” Kimnach added. “McCarthy’s team of water project specialists offers expertise regarding constructability issues, maintenance of plant operations (MOPO) planning and work sequencing, which will enable us to do more in-depth planning around the existing site constraints.”
The anticipated three-year project construction schedule begins in December 2015 with completion slated for December 2018.
