California Water Board approves Xylem¹s ultraviolet disinfection technology

Dec. 2, 2015
Cutting-edge treatment technology offers new option for expanding water reuse in California.

San Diego, California, December 2, 2015 –Xylem announced today that its Wedeco Duron ultraviolet (UV) disinfection system has received conditional acceptance from the California Water Boards’ Division of Drinking Water (DDW)*, making it the first UV disinfection system with an inclined lamp array to be available in California for water reuse.

As California continues to suffer from one of the most severe droughts on record, the state continues to look for additional water sources. Water reuse technology produces high-quality water at a lower life-cycle cost than developing a new water supply. It also delivers a resilient, drought-resistant water source with valuable economic and environmental benefits.

“The Wedeco Duron UV disinfection system is now available to help California address water shortages related to the prolonged drought by cost-efficiently providing purified water for drinking purposes,” explained Kirsten Meyer, Product Manager, Xylem. “The Duron UV system provides substantial energy savings compared with conventional systems due to its overall efficiency and adaptability to changing operating conditions, making it an ideal solution to help create a sustainable water supply in California.”

Water disinfected by Xylem’s Wedeco Duron UV system meets the highest standards as required by Title 22 of the California Code of Regulations (CCR) for recycled waters.

Supported by extensive third party validation, Xylem’s Wedeco Duron UV system can be fine-tuned to match a customer’s water quality, operation conditions and discharge requirements. The innovative design approach ensures that the smallest possible UV system can be installed without compromising performance – saving initial capital costs and operational costs over the life of the system.

The Wedeco Duron UV system combines intelligent control with the most advanced UV lamp and ballast technology, ensuring the correct dose and reducing energy consumption by up to 30 percent compared to conventional open channel UV systems**. The unique 600 watt (W) Ecoray UV lamps used in the Wedeco Duron UV system are installed inclined at 45 degrees, which deliversexcellent performance and facilitates easy maintenance.
