UV demand growing for biological and chemical removal

The West Basin Municipal Water District pre-selected Trojan Technologies Inc. to supply US$ 1.9-million worth of ultraviolet equipment for its wastewater recycling facilities in Los Angeles County.

The West Basin Municipal Water District pre-selected Trojan Technologies Inc. to supply US$ 1.9-million worth of ultraviolet equipment for its wastewater recycling facilities in Los Angeles County.

The system will treat a peak flow of 12.5 million gallons of water a day at the West Basin Water Recycling Facility located in El Segundo, California, before the treated wastewater is injected into local aquifers to prevent seawater intrusion. Trojan's technology eliminates pathogens, such as E. coli and Cryptosporidium, and pesticides, herbicides and 1,4-dioxane.

Trojan President Marvin DeVries announced at WEFTEC on 13 October that municipalities now require treatment systems that remove both biological and chemical contaminants. "Growing demand for Trojan's environmental contaminant treatment (ECT) systems has led to US$ 32 million in orders since the company entered this market two years ago. And we expected continued strong demand as dangerous chemicals are now being detected in water supplies throughout North America and Europe," he said. Trojan Technologies is based in London, Ontario, Canada.
