CDM reorganizes, wins USAID contract, POWER award

Global engineering consultant CDM has reorganized the former International & Public Services Groups into three multi-country business units, each led by a group president: Alex H. Makled, Europe, Middle East and Africa; Stephen J. Hickox, North America East and Latin America; Donald G. Munksgaard, North America West/Central and Asia.

USAID also chose it to continue supplying architecture-engineer (A-E) services — including water resources and environmental engineering — under the agency’s Global A-E Infrastructure Services Indefinite Quantity Contract (IQC) in a five-year deal worth up to $500 million. CDM will lead a team of world class firms that assist USAID field missions and bureaus with an emphasis on disaster and post-disaster/

conflict states. Prior work has been in Afghanistan, Lebanon, West Bank & Gaza, Jordan, Egypt, Kosovo, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Montenegro.

And the Millennium Challenge Account-Lesotho Authority chose CDM for a five-year, $12.7 million contract for management of Metolong Dam activities in Maseru and neighboring towns. The $180 million project is financed by the Millennium Challenge Corp. (MCC), the Lesotho government and an Arab consortium, the World Bank and European Union.

The California Public Officials for Water & Environment Reform Council presented the 2008 POWER Award to the Arroyo Seco Foundation, city of Pasadena, and CDM for the Central Arroyo Stream Restoration Program, a $2.5 million design-build project completed in August 2008.

Franklin Electric restructures in Americas, buys two pump firms

Franklin Electric Co. Inc., the world’s largest manufacturer of submersible electric motors and a leading supplier of water pumping and fuel pumping systems, has completed the acquisition of 75% of outstanding shares of Vertical S.p.A., for cash.

Based in Dueville, near Vicenza, Italy, and specializing in pressed and welded stainless steel pumps and components, Vertical had 2008 net revenues of about €20 million. The Bluffton, Indiana, USA-based Franklin also purchased CAL Pump, a Valencia, California, maker of waterscape systems. Other recent acquisitions include the Little Giant Pump Co. and Monarch Industries’ Pump Division.

And, as part of a restructuring for its North America and Brazil facilities, it will move 500,000 manhours of work to its Linares, Mexico, factory, roughly 80% of which is from its Siloam Springs, Arkansas, plant, by June 2009.

To support sales growth in Brazil, the company also will transfer its manufacturing operations in Joinville to a new facility being built there by the second half of 2009. It will sell the existing facility.

New desalination contracts awarded to Severn Trent Services

Fort Washington, Pennsylvania-based Severn Trent Services was picked to supply TETRA® LP Block™ filter underdrain systems for use in pre-treatment filtration at desalination plants in North Africa and South America designed and built by ACCIONA Agua, of Spain.

The contracts are the latest of a number of recent orders for the technology in the desalination market, including an order for their use at the largest desalination plant in Europe. Forming the floor of rapid gravity sand filters to treat seawater prior to RO membranes, the system supports the sand media during filter operation and provides excellent air and water distribution during backwashing to enhance filter cleaning and extend run times. This is further improved by the new TETRA FlumeFlow™ backwash air and water distribution system. The desalination plants are scheduled for commissioning in 2009. The filter for the 300-MLD plant in North Africa will employ over 3,500 TETRA LP Blocks across 20 cells, each 5m wide and 15.5m in length, while the 400 MLD South American plant will use 4,500 blocks in 18 cells, each measuring 19m x 6m.

In other news:

  • The city of Danville, Virginia, USA, formed a three-year, $6 million public-private partnership with Severn Trent Services to provide contract management, operations and maintenance services for its 24-mgd Northside Wastewater Treatment Plant. Severn Trent also will be responsible for an industrial pretreatment program, 11 pump stations and a biosolids land application program.
  • Severn Trent Laboratories (STL) Ltd. bought the field analytical tools business, Cybersense, expanding its existing portfolio of field services which includes equipment hire and on-site sampling. It also won an Institute of Water Officers Wales Innovation Award for a new analytical method to determine pesticides in drinking water.
