The Swedish consultancy SWECO will design several small dam installations in Senegal that will enable local residents to store water captured during the intense rainy season and use it during the rest of the year.

The new dam installations, estimated to cost one million euros, will be located in six drainage basins in the vicinity of Dakar and Thiés. In the inception phase, SWECO engineers will conduct a feasibility study and an Environmental Impact Assessment, to identify the best locations and designs for the dams. The assignment also includes the assessment of project benefits and costs.

Dams in two of the drainage basins, which were built at the end of the 1990s, need rehabilitation and SWECO's four-year assignment is to prepare the detailed design and tender documentation for these dams, in addition to supervising the construction work.

The project is being implemented on behalf of the Ministry of Water in Senegal with financing from the Nordic Development Fund.
