SmartMeters™ to replace all domestic meters in Qatar
The Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation awarded a US$ 4-million contract to Severn Trent Services (STS) to supply the high-tech, electronic SmartMeters™, in an effort to replace all of the country's domestic water meters.
STS already installed 8,000 meters in the past three years, but this contract pushes the number of STS meters purchased up to 14,000. Besides the capital Doha, new meters have already been installed in Al-Khor and Shamaal areas.
The purchase followed a two-year test of various types of meters in direct sunlight before the corporation opted for the SmartMeter. The system is proving popular in the Middle East due to its ability to withstand high temperatures and to read accurately even with air or sand present in the distribution system. The meter is compatible with any automated meter reading (AMR) technology, an important feature given that the Qatar corporation is currently seeking an AMR solution as part of its metering programme.
