General purpose cut-off saws had been a frequent solution for cutting pipe in the trench. However, these saws pose an inherent risk of rotational kickback when cutting the lower 1/3 of a pipe.
Rotational kickback is a rapid reaction force created if the blade of a cut-off saw slows or stops suddenly when cutting within the kickback zone (i.e. front, upper quadrant) of the blade.
Beginning in 2012, American Water began a company-wide initiative to transition to the ICS PowerGrit Utility Chain Saw for increased operator safety, speed and ease of use. Reduction in excavation required around the pipe allows for quick turnaround on main repairs preventing unnecessary downtime to American Water's customers.
