The US Agency for International Development (USAID) selected the US company Camp Dresser & McKee to carry out rapid assessment of water supply and sanitation infrastructure needs in Kabul, Kunduz and Kandahar. The US$ 1.4-million task order calls for CDM to develop an action plan for USAID to provide immediate support to repair and replace existing infrastructure and preliminary feasibility and design work for new infrastructure. Other international donors, including the World Bank and Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW), and the Afghanistan government will fund this work.
The CDM team will identify potential projects and coordinate with non-governmental organisations and other donors conducting urban infrastructure needs assessments. In the first phase, the team will collaborate with USAID in Kabul, Afghan officials and others to deliver an assessment report and draft scope of work. CDM will assist USAID in the second phase by implementing the action plan through technical assistance, procurement and construction supervision assistance.
