The importance of managing river basins correctly is a topic rising up the political agenda. Take river basins such as the Mekong Delta and Danube River, two of the longest rivers in the world. With the latter crossing 19 international boundaries, there is a need for cross boundary cooperation to ensure the sustainability of these major river resources. And these are just two examples
On the first day of the Singapore International Water Week, the world's leading river basin and delta organisations will come together. The aim? To interact, share and exchange experiences and know–how on a range of topics, spanning from the holistic management of watersheds to adaptation strategies in response to climate change.
PUB is co–organising the inaugural River Basin and Delta Management Workshop with Singapore–Delft Water Alliance (SDWA) at this year's Water Week. The SDWA is a research center of excellence for water knowledge and involves PUB and the National University of Singapore and Deltares (the Netherlands). It was established through an initiative of the Environment Water Industry Development Council in Singapore.
It is hoped that through this workshop the scope of the Water Week will be expanded beyond urban solutions and look at topics such as integrated water resource management and climate change adaptations in the context of river basins and deltas.
Themed "Opportunities and Challenges in response to Climate Change", the workshop will include case studies looking at the Danube River, Mekong Delta, Mississippi River and Yellow River, among others.
The one–day workshop will focus on two overarching tracks: (i) integrated management of river basins and deltas; and (ii) adapting to climate change in river basins and deltas.
