Wastewater treatment plant in Bosnia and Herzegovina funded by EBRD, EU & SIDA

SARAJEVO, Bosnia and Herzegovina – A new wastewater treatment plant and collection system that will service more than 35,000 people has attracted over €20 in financing in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is providing €12 over two phases of the project, while the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency and the European Union provided grant co-financing amounting to an extra €4 million and €6.5 million, respectively.

Old septic tanks will be removed as part of the project, together with the replacement of asbestos-cement water pipes. The water supply network will also be expanded.

A consultant hired for the project also ensured that all the facilities comply with European Union (EU) standards. The donor partners also funded technical cooperation to help manage and implement the project.

Years of poor maintenance in Bosnia and Herzegovina’s water sector have result in weak economic governance and poor infrastructure.
