British company Gurney Environmental has finished an upgrade to the Harbour Town wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) near Kingston Town in Jamaica for the National Water Commission (NWC).
The project followed the signing of an MOU between the two companies earlier this year (read WWi article) and included the installation of Accel-o-Fac wastewater treatment.
Powered by wind energy, the aim of the installation is to reduce reliance on mains electricity, which can be intermittent and cost up to 40 cents/KwH.
In a statement the company said: “The Accel-o-Fac system can be used to upgrade existing lagoon-based systems providing accelerated processing rates, increased DO levels, uniform loading of the cells (no influent zone hotspots), elimination of short circuiting (increasing true detention time), accelerated disinfection, complete odour control and accelerated sludge digestion — all of which allows greater loads to be applied to existing lagoons, thereby extending their life whilst improving performance.”
