Pittsburgh, PA. Calgon Corporation announced recently that it has received a contract form the Moon Township Municipal Authority (MTMA) near Pittsburgh, Pa., to supply four Sentinel UV Disinfection Systems for the Township's drinking water plant. The contract is valued at over $300,000 and includes a license fee to operate the systems.
The Sentinel Systems use ultraviolet light (UV) technology to inactivate cryptosporidium and other pathogens that could pose a health threat to the citizens of Moon Township. Sentinel reactors will treat up to 5.5 million gallons of water per day. Calgon Carbon has patented the application of low-energy UV light for the inactivation of cryptosporidium and offers water producers a license fee of $0.015 per 1,000 gallons treated to utilize the technology. Moon Township elected to make a one-time lump sum payment to CCC for a paid up license for use of the technology.
Commenting on the contract, John Riley, general manager of the MTMA said, "We are making modifications to our water filtration plant to ensure the Authority's ability to continue to provide a reliable, adequate supply of excellent quality drinking water at the lowest long-term cost to our customers.
"In the past, all water was taken from wells prior to treatment, but in the future the well water will be blended with surface water to increase capacity. Although the use of ultraviolet light technology is not required to receive a PA Department of Environmental Protection permit for treatment of the blended water, MTMA wants to provide this additional treatment ba5rrier to allow our customers to have the same confidence in their water supply as when only groundwater was used.
"MTMA has used Calgon Carbon's granular activated carbon (GAC) for over 15 years to remove objectionable taste and odor and is planning the addition of a powdered activated carbon feed system. The continued use of GAC and the new Sentinel systems will provide protection for our customers against both toxins and biotoxins."
Jim Cederna, Calgon Carbon's chairman and chief executive officer, also commented on the contract, said, "We are excited that Moon Township chose our patented Sentinel technology to meet their drinking water treatment needs. The increasing acceptance of our UV systems by municipalities as a cost-effective barrier against pathogens will contribute to our company's improved financial performance in 2002 and beyond."
