Temecula, CA and Mansfield, MA, March 19, 2002 -- Opto 22, a manufacturer of hardware and software products for automation and control, remote monitoring, and data acquisition, and Axeda Systems Inc., a provider of device relationship management software and services, announced Monday that they have entered into a strategic alliance to promote a remote monitoring, service, and management solution for devices and equipment across a variety of industries.

Axeda specializes in providing Device Relationship Management (DRM) software and services. DRM is a category of enterprise software products that leverage the global reach of the Internet to provide the a real-time, continuous exchange of information between remote devices, business systems and people. The Axeda DRM™ System is a Firewall-Friendly™, distributed information management system composed of software products that interoperate at the device and enterprise to securely provide users and business systems with real-time device information.

Opto 22 is a manufacturer of high-quality hardware and software products that allow organizations to connect their manufacturing equipment, industrial automation systems, and other real-world devices to computer networks for the purposes of automation and control, remote monitoring, and enterprise data acquisition.

The integrated solution will enable customers to connect their critical business assets and systems, such as manufacturing machinery; energy, security, and environmental systems; and telecommunications equipment, to the databases and business applications they use to run their companies. This connection allows organizations to establish a vital link between these two sides of their business and improve overall operations through the monitoring, management, and acquisition of key business intelligence from throughout their entire enterprise. Secure, bi-directional communication is enabled within a diverse set of devices, even when they are hidden behind corporate firewalls. The innovative combination of Axeda and Opto 22 technologies delivers a robust infrastructure and set of applications for device service, monitoring and management, as well as enterprise applications integration.

"There are millions of devices that cannot be accessed by the service and business professionals who need the information locked inside to improve service, reduce costs, and enhance customer satisfaction," said Grant Challenger, vice president of sales at Axeda. "Opto 22's SNAP Ultimate I/O technology allows us to extend the reach of Axeda DRM to virtually any device in an enterprise, on a production floor, or at a remote site with the ease of installation and low cost required for rapid deployment and return on investment."

"Opto 22 and Axeda share a common vision: to leverage the power of the Internet and business' IT networks, in order to improve the flow of device data to business applications and information stakeholders," said Bob Sheffres, vice president of Opto 22. "We have concentrated our efforts in providing a seamless connection to monitor, control and gather data from a wide variety of devices and equipment, while Axeda has focused on securely managing this data so it can be used to solve real business problems. Aligning our efforts allows us to provide our customers with a complete solution."

Axeda and Opto 22 will demonstrate their integrated solution for the first time at the National Manufacturing Week exhibition beginning today in Chicago. Visitors can view the live demo at Axeda booth 5715, located within the Microsoft Partner Pavilion.
