VANCOUVER, British Columbia, January 14, 2002 -- Since its agreement with USFilter for distribution of its ultraviolet disinfection systems, Service Systems International reported requests for quotes in excess of $73 million.

On January 29, 2001, USFilter and Service Systems International, Ltd. signed an agreement to launch a strategic alliance to market Service Systems Ultra Guard® ultraviolet disinfection technology products in North, South, Central America and the Caribbean.

Quote activity has steadily increased during the first year of the USFilter and Service Systems alliance. Including non-USFilter territory inquiries, requests for quotations during this period have a total value in excess of US$73 million.

USFilter has recently sold, installed and is in the process of starting up two complete UV disinfection systems. In late December 2001, Service Systems completed the delivery of the two UV disinfection systems. One system, including twelve (12) Ultra Guard® Single Lamp Reactors (SLR), each with one low-pressure, ultra-high intensity, high-efficiency ultraviolet lamp, was delivered to the Spring Branch WWTP for the Sussex Service Authority in Virginia.

This facility is designed to treat up to 5.0 million gallons per day of sewage wastewater collected from a number of combined plants. The second system was shipped to San Jose de Maipo, Chile, to be used by the country's largest utility owner.

USFilter also purchased a Product Demonstration Unit (PDU), which will ship in early January 2002. This is a full scale testing unit with two (2) lamps. USFilter's Wallace & Tiernan Products will use the PDU to demonstrate the Ultra Guard® SLR unit's efficacy at wastewater treatment plants located in North America. During the first year of the strategic alliance, four PDU demonstrations were performed.

These demonstrations, which took place at wastewater treatment plants in the Eastern USA, met and exceeded the treatment standards required by the plant owners and engineers. Based on the success of these demonstrations and other activities, the Company expects a number of orders to be issued in the near future.
