Company also announces acquisition in Germany
London, Ontario, Canada, Nov. 22, 2002 -- Trojan Technologies Inc. on Friday announced that it has been awarded three contracts in the U.K. for its ultraviolet (UV) wastewater treatment systems. The total value of the contracts is approximately CDN $2.9 million (€1.8 million).
Trojan's UV equipment will be installed at three wastewater facilities operated by United Utilities. Located on the southern coast of Wales -- in Pen-y -bont, Llanelli, and Swansea -- the three plants treat a combined flow of 80 million gallons (303,000 m?) of water a day.
Trojan is the global leader in the UV wastewater market. "As member countries of the European Union now have to meet established bathing water standards, we expect continued strong demand for our UV treatment technology throughout Europe," said company President and CEO Allan Bulckaert.
Trojan is also a major supplier of UV disinfection systems to drinking water facilities. More than 200 installations in Europe, for example, currently use Trojan systems to protect against microorganisms in municipal drinking water supplies.
To further strengthen its market presence in Europe, Trojan also announced today that it has purchased the UV assets of Duker AG & Co. of Laufach, Germany.
Duker has an installed base of more than 1,000 UV disinfection systems -- primarily at drinking water facilities in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Duker's operations and products will be merged into Trojan Technologies Deutschland GmbH, located in Schollkrippen, which will serve the sales and service needs of these customers.
The acquisition is expected to contribute approximately CDN $1.2 million (€760,000) in annual revenue to Trojan Technologies. "Duker gives us a broader platform of operations, a stronger network of sales and service, and a more competitive position in this critically important market," Bulckaert explained. "We look forward to serving our new customers."
This is Trojan's second acquisition in Germany this year. Earlier, the company purchased Ueberall GmbH, a firm located near Hamburg, which provides UV systems for the industrial-commercial markets including the marine sector.
Germany, along with other EU countries, is moving to comply with EU regulations by passing a law that will come into force on January 1, 2003, requiring all water 'for human application' to be free of pathogens. This will include not only drinking water, but also water used in the food and beverage industries. "This creates an enormous new market for water disinfection equipment - a market which we are now well positioned to serve," Bulckaert noted.
Trojan's UV equipment destroys water-borne pathogens such as E.coli, Giardia and Cryptosporidium. Increasingly, municipalities and water utilities are choosing UV as part of a multi-barrier approach to treatment because the technology is highly effective, cost efficient, and environmentally safe.
Trojan designs, manufactures and sells UV systems for municipal wastewater and drinking water facilities, as well as for the industrial, commercial and residential markets. The company also provides UV treatment for the removal of toxic chemicals from water. With approximately 3,000 municipal facilities in over 25 countries using its technology, Trojan has the largest installed base of UV systems in the world.
