ANSONIA, Conn., April 4, 2002 -- As a result of the Northeastern drought, Birmingham Utilities has announced that it has suspended its main flushing program for this spring and has asked the local fire departments to refrain from hydrant pump drilling, an activity that consumes water.
In addition, Birmingham continues to aggressively monitor for leaks in its system through its leak detection program. Customers were also reminded that it is always best to conscientiously conserve water.
John S. Tomac, the company president noted that the company monitors the water levels at the company well fields on a daily basis. This is extremely important since over half our supply comes from these well fields; the remaining supply is purchased from the South Central CT Regional Water Authority.
While he noted that water levels at those well fields are normal, he noted that the Northeast has received decreased rainfall over the last three years, and it is prudent to monitor your water usage.
Birmingham Utilities, Inc. is an investor-owned water company serving primarily the cities of Ansonia and Derby and whose common stock is traded on the AMEX under the symbol "BIW."
