ENGLEWOOD, Fla., May 20, 2002 --The Englewood Water District's expanded wastewater treatment facility has begun operation. A ribbon cutting ceremony marked the opening of the 1 mgd expansion, which touts expanded treatment capability and a water reclamation program.
The $3.5 million update expanded the wastewater treatment facility's treatment capacity from 1.2 million gallons to 2.2 million gallons per day. The new 1 mgd plant allows further area residents to hook into the central sewer system and abandon the use of septic systems.
The expanded plant also features a new aquifer storage recovery (ASR) system, which will store reclaimed water underground. During the rainy season, the ASR system will allow the district to temporarily store drinking water quality water underground. During the dry season, the stored water will be withdrawn and used for irrigation purposes at local golf courses and the city's new Englewood Sports Complex.
The district is already planning another expansion phase to increase treatment capacity to 3 mgd. The expansion is needed to meet the increased treatment demand as residents are hooked into the central wastewater system.
