ROTHSCHILD, Wis., Feb. 18, 2002 -- USFilter evaporator and biological wastewater treatment systems have begun operation to treat pharmaceutical wastewaters for Synthetech, Inc., an independent US-based supplier of peptide building blocks and specialty amino acids for peptide and peptidomimetic drugs based in Albany, Ore. The contract with USFilter is worth $900,000.
The batch PACT® biological wastewater treatment system by USFilter's Zimpro Products is the primary process being employed to treat wastewater. It uses powdered activated carbon and bacteria to efficiently and effectively treat wastewater.
Prior to executing the contract for the full-scale system, comprehensive analytical work and pilot testing was done at Zimpro Products on the actual wastewaters to confirm design and performance. Testing included biological treatment (PACT), breakpoint chlorination, carbon adsorption, evaporation, and solids dewatering programs.
"USFilter's treatment approach allows us to meet all local, state, and federal air and water requirements," says Joel Melka, director of manufacturing for Synthetech.
Synthetech's products are distributed globally to major pharmaceutical companies. Over 300 novel amino acids/alcohols/esters/amides are available from Synthetech for clinical development as well as commercial purposes.
