SARASOTA, FL, Sep. 21, 2000 (Sarasota Herald-Tribune) — A Sarasota County utility force main ruptured Tuesday morning and about 1,000 gallons of sewage leaked into Sarasota Bay.

The leak occurred near the yacht area of Southbay Yacht & Racquet Club at 1400 Southbay Drive in Venice. The effluent entered a storm drain at the bay.

Utility workers quickly dusted the ground with lime, a powerful disinfectant, vacuumed loose fluid and repaired the break.

Kent Kimes, Sarasota County's pollution control manager, said he didn't know what caused the break.

The Sarasota County Health Department will monitor the water quality of the bay and its tributaries.

There's a good chance that "contaminated water" signs will be placed in the water temporarily.
