December 12, 2000 -- Terre Hill Borough wants to hold the line on property taxes in 2001.
Borough council on Nov. 28 approved a preliminary budget of $700,216, a 9.45 percent increase compared to this year's spending level of $661,440. The proposed budget keeps the real estate tax rate at 2.8 mills.
While the tax rate remains unchanged, residents could pay more in water and sewer fees in 2001.
The current water fee is $35 per 0-3,000 gallons used and $1.85 per additional thousand gallons. The proposed change would raise the fee to $35 per 0-2,000 gallons used and $2.70 for each additional thousand gallons. Currently, the sewer fee is $35 for 0-2,000 gallons plus $4.40 per each additional thousand gallons. The proposed rate is $35 for 0-2,000 gallons and $6 for each additional thousand gallons.
The proposed rates will be approved at the Dec. 12 council meeting. Water rates haven't risen since 1989; sewer since 1993.
With the tax rate at 2.8 mills, the owner of a $100,000 house would pay the same in 2001 as 2000 — $280.
The borough expects to take in $119,500 from property taxes and earned income of $85,000.
Expenditures include $25,000 for a new septage receiving station, $10,000 for a sewer lift station and $15,000 for water line replacements on Broad Street and College Avenue.
Residents can inspect the preliminary budget until Thursday, Dec. 28, when it will be adopted by council.
