Gilberts trustees will be getting some help from Kane County with collecting special taxes to build a new sewer treatment plant.
County board members Tuesday agreed to collect the taxes from a special service area for the $62 million project.
The money will be used to build a sewage treatment plant near the Timber Trails subdivision and make water system improvements.
The improvements will benefit three new subdivisions, including Timber Trails and an existing section of the village north of Route 72. However, only residents in the new subdivisions will pay a special tax for the improvements.
Village officials said residents will be charged a flat tax that will range between $1,000 and $1,700. The tax will appear on homeowners' annual property tax bills.
Most of the homeowners in Timber Trails will be charged about $1,700, and townhouse owners will be charged about $1,000, said John DeAngelis, an attorney working with the village on the project.
County board members backed the request, but many expressed concern over how the special tax is set up. Most special tax districts figure the tax rate on a home's value, not a flat fee.
County officials said the tax set-up will require extra work when creating tax bills for those homeowners. Other county board members feared that agreeing to collect the special taxes may spur similar requests from other towns.
Gilberts officials, however, noted that the tax needs to be included on the property tax bill to secure a better interest rate for the loans needed to build the sewer treatment plant.
