TORONTO, Ontario, Oct. 16, 2000 (Market News Publishing via COMTEX)—ZENON Environmental Inc. announced that Mr. Wenjun Liu is the first recipient of the ZENON Membrane Technology Prize and will receive U.S. $10, 000 for his innovative research on extractive membrane bioreactor treatment for wastewater.
The jury for the competition consisted of an independent international panel of experts from the environmental sector chaired by Dr. Norbert Schmidtke, one of Canada's foremost environmental process engineers. Other members of the jury included Prof. Tom Stephenson of the UK, Prof. Takashi Asano of the USA, Prof. Roger Ben Aim of France, Dr. Ing. Max Dohmann of Germany and Prof. Alberto Rozzi of Italy.
"We are very pleased to recognize Mr. Liu for his achievement in the field of membrane technology for wastewater treatment," said Dr. Andrew Benedek, Chairman and CEO of ZENON Environmental Inc. "In a time of water shortages and increasing industrial pollutants, research such as this will contribute to further our understanding and knowledge of membranes and the positive impact they will have on society and our environment."
Mr. Liu is a Ph.D. candidate at the Department of Chemical Engineering in the University of Bath, UK, under supervision from Prof. John Howell. His thesis entitled "A Novel Extraction-Membrane Bioreactor for Treating Priority Pollutants in the Presence of High Concentrations of Inorganics" was chosen for its inventive application and solution to wastewater treatment problems. The ZENON Membrane Technology Grant is an annual international competition focused on encouraging research on membrane technology. The next grant will be awarded in August 2001 for the most innovative application and solution for process or drinking water purification and wastewater treatment. The deadline for submission is June 1, 2001 with screening to select the six finalists to begin June 15.
