Dec. 9, 2003 -- Water treatment technologies, membrane system design and ion exchange dynamics will be discussed in-depth during post-conference workshops for the annual Industrial Water Conference, set for Dec. 9-11, in Las Vegas, NV.

Workshop 101 -- Water Treatment Technologies: Advanced Applications is designed for engineers and project managers involved with specification and evaluation of industrial water treatment systems. The workshop will provide an overview of major operations for boiler feed water applications.
Beginning with a review of water chemistry and the design rules for developing a water treatment system, the course will cover the major processes including: microfiltration, ultrafiltration, media filtration, ion exchange, reverse osmosis, EDI, condensate polishing and chemical injection. The seminar will review how and why these processes work, the major criteria and helpful hints in process unit selection and the fine points of system integration.
The day-long course will be led by Andrew Zaske, director of the technical marketing group for GE Water Technologies. Cost for the course is $350, which covers course materials, certificate of completion, lunch and refreshments.
Workshop 102 -- Membrane System Design, is intended for those who have a basic comprehension of membrane technology. It addresses the engineering design of pressure-driven membrane technologies, with emphasis on reverse osmosis and nanofiltration. The objective is to educate the attendees on the effect of various parameters on the engineering design of membrane systems.
Each attendee will be challenged to design several systems as a function of specific parameters. The major points to be covered include system design as a function of permeate quality requirements, water temperature, osmotic pressure, permeate flow rate and membrane element properties.
The day-long course will presented by Peter Cartwright, owner of Cartwright Consulting Co. Cartwright specializes in technical consulting in high technology separation processes for water purification, wastewater treatment and food/chemical processing applications. Cost for the course is $350, which covers course materials, certificate of completion, lunch and refreshments.
Workshop 103 -- Ion Exchange Dynamics: A Guide to Operating and Troubleshooting Modern Industrial Ion Exchange Systems will introduce participants to modern industrial ion exchange resins and systems. Proper system monitoring and control will be discussed. A logical troubleshooting procedure for solving system operating problems will be presented. Participants will also engage in simple problem solving exercises.
Instructor for the half-day course will be Wayne Bernahl, President of W. Bernahl Enterprises Ltd., a consulting firm located in the Chicago, IL, area. Cost for the course is $250, which covers course materials, certificate of completion, lunch and refreshments.
The Industrial Water Conference will also include a variety of technical sessions providing information on systems for makeup and process water, cooling water and wastewater treatment.
The conference will be held at the Las Vegas Convention Center and will be co-located with POWER-GEN International. POWER-GEN is the largest conference & exhibition serving the electric power industry in the US. The show is expected to draw 20,000 attendees and 1200 exhibiting companies.
Attendees at the Industrial Water Conference will receive a free pass to walk the POWER-GEN exhibit floor.
One area of the huge exhibit floor has been set aside as the "Water Pavilion." The Pavilion will feature more than 40 companies that specialize in a wide-array of water-related equipment and technologies for the electric power industry. Other companies that feature water-related equipment will be scattered throughout the exhibit area.
