Dec. 1, 2003 -- Tenergy Water of New Britain,Connecticut, were contracted by Ragnar Benson, Inc. to design and manufacture a water treatment system for the Marsh Run Generation Project located in Fauquier County, Virginia.

The Tenergy Water treatment system will process secondary treated wastewater for use as the sole source of water feeding the 680MW simple cycle Marsh Run plant.

The Marsh Run project, currently under construction by Ragnar Benson, will be owned and operated by Old Dominion Electric Cooperative (ODEC) with the primary goal of meeting peak-electric generation requirements for Old Dominion's twelve member distribution cooperatives throughout Maryland, Delaware, and Eastern Virginia. Peak-electric generation is needed by utilities when electric demands are at their highest, usually on the hottest or coldest days of the year.

"Marsh Run will be the largest consumer of water in their municipality. Therefore, the permit for the power plant stipulated that they use only treated wastewater for their operations. Tenergy Water was selected as the water treatment provider not only because of our ability to deliver on budget and on time, but also due to our understanding of the power industry. Our experience gave us the capability to customize a solution for treating the "gray water" feed source," said Mr. Dale Langefels, Senior Vice President of Corporate Sales & Marketing.

"We are seeing a growing trend in the use of secondary sewage as a make-up water source for new and existing industrial plants. Tenergy Water offers various technologies and design assistance to insure that our clients have the correct solution for these difficult-to-treat waters," Langefels added.

The Marsh Run water treatment system will consist of a specialized pretreatment approach followed by reverse osmosis to produce make-up water for fire/service water, evaporative coolers, and off-site mobile demineralization.

Tenergy Water is working jointly with the contractor's engineer, Framatome ANP, to develop a highly customized operating scheme and control philosophy to insure that the peaking plant can be started-up and shut down successfully and efficiently by the owner's operations staff.

Because the facility may sit idle for long periods of time during the off-peak energy season, Tenergy Water had the additional challenge of developing a lay-up approach to minimize the risk of biological fouling. Fouling due to stagnation is a primary concern and has been addressed within the design.

Tenergy Water's sales team pointed to a number of reasons why Ragnar Benson selected them as their water treatment system supplier. Tenergy's in-house manufacturing facilities allow them to assume quality control over every step of the process and meet the aggressive end-of-year delivery schedule.

Tenergy's proximity to the site allows them to quickly dispatch sales, engineering, and service personnel to the Marsh Run facility as the need arises. In addition to design, engineering, and manufacturing, Tenergy Water is running concurrent treatability testing of the gray water in Remington, VA to simulate the large-scale system and make on-going improvements in equipment design and chemistry control.

Tenergy Water LLC of New Britain, Conn., is the provider of a range of water treatment solutions, including pure water systems for industrial applications, service deionization treatments, and the distribution of water treatment solutions for residential and light commercial applications. Tenergy Water combines over 400 years of industry experience with state-of-the-art facilities to offer its clients custom solutions, engineered and financed to meet their specifications.
