The first full-scale U.S. sludge waste volume reduction system will be installed during a $250M upgrade of Lake Oswego, OR's water supply.

CARY, NC, Oct. 31, 2013 -- The first full-scale sludge waste volume reduction system, or High Concentration Sludge (HCS) System, in the United States will be installed during a $250-million program to upgrade, upsize and modernize the water supply system of the city of Lake Oswego, Ore.

Kruger, a subsidiary of Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies, was awarded a contract by the city of Lake Oswego, the Managing Partner for Lake Oswego-Tigard Water Supply Partnership. The partnership was formed in 2008 between Lake Oswego and its neighboring city Tigard to meet the current and future water supply needs of the two Oregon communities.

The HCS system, named ACTIFLO®, is a high-rate ballasted clarification process utilized to provide drinking water treatment. Likewise, it features two individual concrete process trains capable of producing a total of 40 MGD of water. The effluent turbidity is guaranteed at or below 2 NTU while treating influent turbidities as high as 100 NTU. Each ACTIFLO® train uniquely operates with an HCS system that provides greater than 50 percent sludge waste volume reduction. This substantial waste reduction allows for significant capital cost savings by reducing the amount of downstream residuals handling equipment. It also generates overall plant operating cost savings that will provide a relatively rapid return on investment for the owners.

The ACTIFLO® installation will be fully operational in October of 2014.
