HOLLAND, Mich., Nov. 19, 2001 -- Under a recently signed $7.7 million equipment contract, USFilter will supply the city of Chattanooga, Tenn. with six 350 cubic foot J-Vap® units as well as all necessary ancillary support equipment. The J-Vap® units will be retrofitted to the city's Moccasin Bend WWTP.
Robert Mau, a technical sales manager at USFilter, further explains how his company's technology will benefit the city of Chattanooga. "Like many American communities, the city of Chattanooga's population continues to grow. So too does the volume of wastewater treated and the resulting wastewater solids. Recycling these solids helps communities like Chattanooga save precious landfill space and encourages the reuse of nutrient-rich wastewater solids."
Several years ago, the city of Chattanooga began searching for a solution to overstressing its local landfill. USFilter proposed eliminating sludge from the municipal wastewater treatment plant by drying the sludge and turning it into Class A biosolids, which would allow the city more options for disposing of the processed sludge.
After investigating other alternatives such as lime stabilization, thermal drying and other processes, Chattanooga determined that USFilter's proposed equipment solution had the best combination of features, benefits and attributes to provide long-term performance. USFilter's J-Vap® dewatering/drying system could be customized and retrofit into the existing plant, thus minimizing startup and operating costs as well as extensive plant modifications.
To better illustrate the J-Vap® system's efficiencies, USFilter conducted extensive on-site testing with a self-contained mobile J-Vap® pilot unit, successfully demonstrating its capabilities and Class A biosolids production.
The installation is scheduled for completion in the third quarter of 2003.
The J-Vap® system dewaters, dries, and produces reusable Class A biosolids all in a single application, thus eliminating intermediate material handling. The systems, ranging in size from five cubic feet (0.15 meters) to 370 cubic feet (10.7 meters), allow the plant to dry to any desired moisture level, are energy-efficient and have low emissions. The dewatering/drying process can result in solids of greater than 90 percent, allowing cakes to be upgraded from Class B to Class A biosolids.
USFilter has developed a number of innovative technologies to help municipalities manage their biosolids. Technologies from digestion to thermal treatment to composting turn wastewater residuals into high-quality Class A biosolids that are safe for land application. USFilter's cutting-edge Class A biosolids technologies and research, like the J-Vap® dewatering/drying system, help communities across the country recycle materials for return to the environment.
