Fort Washington, PA, December 6, 2001 — To better serve the needs of about four million residents while restoring the City's oldest water treatment facility, the City of Detroit will build a new municipal water works park.
Severn Trent Services has been awarded a large contract by the City to integrate the disinfection system and supply equipment for the plant's chlorination process.
As one of the largest design-build-maintain projects undertaken by a U.S. water treatment facility, the new $275 million Detroit Water Works Park II will be a fully automated 240 million gallon per day plant, able to supply fresh drinking water to a 1,000 square mile service area. All construction for the new facility must take place at the current Water Works Park site, posing the challenge of maintaining operation while simultaneously replacing existing equipment.
To provide the city with the required state-of-the-art chlorination system, Severn Trent Services has integrated various technologies to complement the supply of Capital Controls™ chlorinators, leak detection, and emergency shut-off systems. General Manager of Disinfection for Severn Trent Services Gunnar Thordarson stated, "We were uniquely qualified to do the work for the City of Detroit due to our overall disinfection capabilities and ability to coordinate the efforts of multiple suppliers in offering a complete disinfection package." Some of the integrated technologies include electrically operated valves, PLC interface, and scales to measure the amount of chlorine used in the process.
The 11-member Detroit Water Team has been responsible for managing the entire design-build-maintain process. From project inception, the relationship between Severn Trent Services and this team has been one of flexibility and cooperation while jointly pursuing common objectives. The Detroit Water Works Park II, also to include the building of a museum, science academy and research park, is due to be completed by the spring of 2002.
