OAKVILLE, Ontario, Oct. 22, 2001 — The Duck River Utility Commission in Tennessee has secured a $4 million contract with Zenon for the use if its ZeeWeed® 1000 membrane for treatment of drinking water.
Launched in the global marketplace late last year, the ZeeWeed® 1000 is already operating in plants in Canada, the United States and Germany. The main attribute of the new product is the ease with which an existing water treatment plant can be converted as well as expanded into a high efficiency ultrafiltration facility.
Water providers (municipalities and utilities) are looking for a product that will supply the safety required today in light of various contamination fears as well as high quality water at a reasonable cost.
ZENON's technology has been proven in all areas and the new ZeeWeed® 1000 takes this one step further by providing additional cost savings through lower energy consumption, significantly lower than the ZeeWeed® 500 series of membranes.
"The lower energy consumption was a significant factor in the final decision to choose a membrane supplier," said Randal Braker, General Manager of Duck River Utility Commission. "In looking at upgrading and simultaneously expanding our existing facility, we conducted an extensive evaluation of a number of membrane products.
"The Duck River Utility Commission prides itself on the commitment to our customers in providing pure water at the lowest practical cost. This led us to purchase ZENON's new product in light of the significantly lower energy requirements, in addition to the safety and quality of drinking water offered by membranes."
Construction on the new 14 million gallon per day plant will begin in the spring of 2002 with completion expected in 2003.
"We're very excited to see the rapid rate of commercialization of the ZeeWeed® 1000 and expect it to continue," said Andrew Benedek, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of ZENON. "This new product will allow ZENON to significantly increase its market share for the building of new plants and the upgrading of existing ones."
Benedek also added that in a short period of time, ZENON has established a total of five reference sites globally for the ZeeWeed® 1000.
