WARRENDALE, PA, Mar. 16, 2011 -- The city of Woodland, California, USA, has retrofitted the headworks and return activated sludge (RAS) systems at its Water Pollution Control Facility with five stainless steel Siemens Internalift pumps. The pumps replaced their more than 25-year-old carbon steel predecessors. The new pumps' stainless steel design is expected to be more corrosion-resistant, thus increasing expected equipment longevity. The turnkey operation is valued at over US$1 million, with Siemens providing equipment and installation.

The first three pumps, which are 60 inches in diameter, are located at the Woodland plant's main inlet structure at the wastewater treatment plant and are used to lift plant flow up to the wastewater plant influent structure. The remaining two 48-inch diameter pumps are used to transfer the RAS back into the system.

The Internalift pump's simple, totally enclosed cylinder design greatly improves efficiency and safety, is more environmentally attractive, and confines odors and splashing when compared to external flight pump designs. Abrasive wear, downtime, and power costs are minimized. Flights welded to the cylinder wall help prevent jamming and flush hard debris through. Climatic conditions do not affect pump performance, and pumps are able to run dry indefinitely without risk of damage. The Internalift pump design offers ease of maintenance, prolonged bearing life and ability to lubricate critical components while the pumps are in use.

The pumps were all staged per customer requirements at Siemens' Thomasville, Georgia, facility prior to shipment, and were then shipped as necessary to meet site installation requirements. The customer sees having one company taking care of both the equipment supply and installation of the replacement pumps, all under one contract, as an additional benefit to the city. The turnkey operation will also allow a quick original equipment manufacturer (OEM) retrofit of the Internalift screw pumps prior to the rainy season. Project duration from equipment submittal to delivery of the first set of pumps took approximately five months. Total project duration, including field installation, startup and personnel training, was approximately nine months.
