July 19, 2011 -- Koch Membrane Systems will provide PURON® membrane modules for a new city wastewater treatment facility in Zhangjiagang, China. The system will help to meet stringent local discharge standards in Zhangjiagang, in Jiangsu province, about 150 km northwest of Shanghai.

Pacific Water Treatment Engineering chose membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology for the Zhangjiagang JinGang Sewage Treatment plant because of the facility's close proximity to residential areas, limited space, and high property costs.

"After an extensive evaluation of the major membrane systems available on the market, we selected PURON submerged MBR modules because of their energy efficient design, the smallest footprint requirements as well as KMS' engineering support during the entire project phase," says George Shen, chairman of the board at Pacific Water Treatment Engineering Co., Ltd., a leading engineering company in China selected by the municipality to design and construct the MBR system. "We are also impressed with the strong, braided fibre, which reduces the risk of fibre breakage."

The system is designed to handle an annual average flow of 25,000 m³/d, with peaks of up to 36,000 m³/d. Start-up is scheduled for early 2012.

PURON PSH 1500 modules are specifically designed for large-scale MBR projects. Features such as an optimized permeate extraction manifold and air supply lines reduce the number of piping connections during installation.

China's MBR market has been growing rapidly over the last five years with several installations larger than 10,000 m³/d. KMS has a large base of industrial hollow fibre references in China, ranging from surface water treatment to wastewater recovery in refineries and power plants. The Zhangjiagang City project will be the first large-scale municipal MBR reference for KMS in the country.
