MINNEAPOLIS, MN, Feb. 27, 2008 -- The American Filtration and Separations Society (AFS) is offering short course training on May 19, 2008 in Valley Forge, PA. To kickoff the 21st Annual Conference, May 19-22, 2007, that the American Filtration and Separations Society (AFS) is holding in Valley Forge, PA, there will be eight short courses on May 19, 2008. Two of these courses are "Gas/Solid Separation with Fabric Filters" and "Gas/Solid Separation with Cyclones."

In the "Gas/Solid Separation with Fabric Filters" course, attendees will learn the mechanisms of filtration, the effect of nano fibers on filter performance, filtration of ultra fine particles, the effect of size distribution in filter performance and high temperature filtration. Additional topics include testing filters for dust retention, test methods for reverse pulse jet cleaning, testing of fabric filters, testing of paper filters and various types of cleaning.

In the "Gas/Solid Separation with Cyclones" course, attendee will learn the types of reverse flow cyclones, performance characteristics, the effect of design variables on performance, the effect of operating variables on performance, the effect of inlet duct shape on performance, design of cyclone procedures and the importance of auxiliaries. Additional topics include uniflow cyclone performance, uniflow cyclone application, and applications of the reverse flow cyclone.

These courses are taught by Dr. Kenneth Rubow, Vice President of Engineering, Research and Development at Mott Corporation. He received his BS, MS and Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the University of Minnesota. His specialization was particle technology and particulate filtration. Prior to joining Mott in 1995, Dr. Rubow worked at the University of Minnesota in increasing responsible positions during a 22-year timespan. He was Manager of the Particle Technology Laboratory, Associate Director of the Center for Filtration Research, and Adjunct Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering. Prior to joining Mott he also was a consultant and expert witness for more than 30 companies and government agencies in areas of particle technology and particulate filtration.
