LONDON, Jan. 3, 2008 -- Global engineering company Earth Tech is celebrating after one of its projects for Northern Ireland Water clinched another top award for environmental practice. Fofanny Water Treatment Works won the Environmental Award at the 2007 Utility Industry Achievement Awards, after being nominated by Northern Ireland Water. The project won against entries from Scottish Power and Southern Water.
Earth Tech has already won a 2007 Green Apple award for the same project.
The national award was granted for work on Ireland's first underground water treatment works in Fofanny, County Down, Northern Ireland. The £18m project was undertaken in partnership with Farrans (Construction) Ltd and was specifically designed to blend in with the local landscape, by being partially buried.
The plant's specific objective was to enable drinking water in the province to reach the new stringent EU drinking water standards. As well as blending into the environment, the new plant was designed to be energy efficient and it removed the need for sludge disposal within the catchment area.
The Utility Industry Achievement Awards, now in its tenth year, recognizes excellence in the utilities sector. Earth Tech's project for Northern Ireland Water was one of the winners in the water, energy and telecoms sectors.
Tony White, managing director for UK & Ireland of Earth Tech, said: "We're over the moon that our eco-friendly design has been recognized for a second time. Our environmental expertise is second-to-none and this is down to our committed team at Earth Tech."
Paul Davison, project sponsor for Northern Ireland Water, said: "We're delighted. The entire Fofanny team should be very proud of successfully merging what is effectively an industrial building into one of Northern Ireland's most visited tourist regions."
The ceremony took place at the Grosvenor House Hotel, London W1 on Monday 10 Dec. and was attended by all major utility companies in the UK.
