WTE/CAMBI consortium to construct sludge treatment plant in Lithuania

On 29 September 2008 the German water experts WTE Wassertechnik GmbH together with its Norwegian partner Cambi AS signed a major order for the construction of the sludge treatment plant in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius. The employer is Vilniaus Vandenys, the municipal Water and Wastewater Company of Vilnius. The Consortium will construct one of Europe's most advanced sludge treatment plants for a total invest volume of more then 200 million Litas (approx. 58 million EUR)...

VILNIUS, Lithuania, Oct 1, 2008 -- On 29 September 2008 the German water experts WTE Wassertechnik GmbH together with its Norwegian partner Cambi AS signed a major order for the construction of the sludge treatment plant in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius. The employer is Vilniaus Vandenys, the municipal Water and Wastewater Company of Vilnius.

The Vilnius wastewater treatment plant has been suffering from increasing problems of sludge odor and sludge disposal for several years, so the municipality of Vilnius decided in summer 2007 to issue a tender for the complete construction of a new sludge treatment plant. The Consortium WTE Wassertechnik GmbH/Cambi AS under the leadership of WTE was the winner of that international tender.

The scope of works includes sludge thickening, digestion, sludge dewatering and low-temperature drying as well as the utilization of the produced biogas in a combined heat and power station. By the introduction of a thermal hydrolysis plant, which WTE's partner Cambi of Norway will be fully responsible for, the highly efficient sludge treatment facility ensures a pasteurized and odorless final biosolids product. The resulting high digestion rate and high dry solids feed give only 1/3 to 1/2 the digester volume of conventional systems. In addition the thermal hydrolysis plant will lead to significantly increased biogas production and reduced final product volume, both major benefits for sludge drying. The sludge drying will be low temperature belt dryer running on thermal energy from the combined heat and power station.

By the first installation in the Baltic countries of a sludge treatment plant including thermal hydrolysis and low temperature drying, WTE Wassertechnik GmbH underlines its outstanding position in the Baltic region. Beside the new contract in Vilnius WTE is working at the moment on four other wastewater treatment projects in Lithuania.

WTE has demonstrated international experience and success in the field of designing and building WWTPs of all sizes including the construction of plants in Zagreb, Vienna and Moscow. At the moment WTE is building plants in Warsaw/Poland, Kohtla-Järve/Estonia and Moscow/Russia as well as in the Turkish metropolis of Istanbul.

Cambi AS provides pre-treatment and biogas systems for organic waste and sludge. The compact Cambi plants are designed for high organic loading and enhanced biogas production, and a low volume pathogen-free biosolids product.
