BIRMINGHAM, AL, June 17, 2008 -- The Birmingham Water Works Board (BWWB) meter reading equipment will soon be getting a technological upgrade. RouteSmart Technologies, a computerized routing system for utility meter reading, will install more up-to-date software on the BWWB's current meter reading devices.

The upgrade will come at no cost to the BWWB because it already has a contract with RouteSmart.

RouteSmart works in a GIS-based environment and leverages existing data to sequence meters in read order. It integrates route and meter data with handheld, automatic meter reading devices and helps reduce personnel, vehicles, vehicle mileage, and downtime and overtime costs.

Meter readers receive hard copies of detailed street-level routing directions and maps of service areas and individual routes. The system automatically balances cycle days and driving, walking and combination travel mode routes.

Mac Underwood, BWWB general manager said, "RouteSmart has helped improve our meter reading capabilities to become more efficient. We still have room for growth, but this is helping us to get there faster."

Founded in 1951, the Birmingham Water Works Board serves more than 600,000 customers in Jefferson, Shelby, Blount, Walker and St. Clair counties.
