TORREVIEJA, Spain, April 30, 2008 -- The TETRA® LP Block™ filter underdrain system from Severn Trent Services has been selected for use in the pre-treatment filtration system at a desalination plant currently under construction in Torrevieja, Spain. The TETRA LP Blocks will form the floors of the rapid gravity sand filters that will treat the seawater prior to desalination by reverse osmosis (RO) membranes. The LP Block floor supports the sand media during filter operation and provides excellent distribution of air and water during backwashing to enhance filter cleaning and extend run times.
The desalination plant is being constructed by UTE IDAM Torrevieja, a joint venture comprising Acciona Agua, Acciona Infraestructuras and Romymar, it will initially provide 240,000m³/day of treated water and is scheduled for commissioning in early 2009.
The TETRA LP Block is a dual parallel lateral underdrain system constructed from HDPE moulded plastic blocks that provide effective distribution of both air and water for either concurrent or sequential backwashing. The lightweight construction and easy assembly and installation of the system make it ideal for both new and retrofit filter underdrain applications.
